We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to support the Enterprise Services Support and Solutions (ESSS) Group in the Field Intelligence Operations, National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Systems Engineer functions as part of a best-in-class Information Technology team responsible forengineering solutions and providing system administration as well as computing systems support services in a classified environment (primarily Microsoft Windows based). In this role, you may lead modernization and other Enterprise IT projects and may work both with a collaborative team and independently to improve efficiencies and effectiveness, as well as support success daily and by project. Finally, you will report to the ESSS Group Lead and work collaboratively with intra-, inter-, and external teams with DOE HQ and across the DOE laboratories.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The Systems Engineer works directly with other Enterprise Services teams, and collaborates with the ORNL FIE team and Program Manager, the Department of Energy Headquarters (DOE HQ), Other Government Agencies (OGA's), as well as external customers to design, upgrade, maintain, and monitor new and existing systems.
  • This role relies upon having a strong Microsoft background with Active Directory/Domain and Servers support, and familiarity/ease of use with multiple operating systems in a cleared environment.
  • Additional duties may include COMSEC Custodian, TEMPEST Coordinator, Protected Transmission System (PTS) responsibilities, and may require appointment as an Information Systems Security Engineer (ISSE) for one or more classified systems requiring interpretation, coordination, documentation, and application of information system security requirements.
  • Design, plan, configure and maintain Classified Cloud solution.
  • Design, configure, and maintain operations supervision.
  • Lead Data Center Virtualization.
  • Design, plan, and implement AD Forest migration.
  • Implement and manage storage systems.
  • Plan, configure, implement and maintain Systems Center.
  • Create, update, and maintain Data Center documentation.
  • Manage servers, including Active Directory.
  • Plan, test, and create group policy

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in computer science or related field and five (5) years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Microsoft 365 Certified: Messaging Administrator Associate
  • MCSE: Productivity Solutions Expert
  • Experience in server and system administration in classified environment
  • Experience in architectural design of cloud infrastructure deployment
  • Proven ability in critical thinking, planning, root cause analysis
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
  • Motivated self-starter with capacity to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks and adapt to constantly evolving needs

Special Requirements:

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.

Q clearance with SCI:This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program. In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.
