Job Summary

As a Nuclear Reactor Engineer, analyzes, develops and evaluates plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by themselves or others. Assesses the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering analyses and reactor management plans. Develops and performs physics tests to demonstrate that the core design requirements and limits are met. Primary contact for reactor performance, fuel integrity, fuel equipment performance, fuel-related refueling activities, reactor hardware or reactor-related systems equipment, or a reactor-related program function. Calculates reactor startup critical conditions and provides recommendations and guidance to the operating crew regarding reactivity management. Provides nuclear fuel integrity program monitoring and guidance. Support special nuclear material control and documentation requirements including SNM custodial duties.

Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of reactor core operation, core technical specifications limits, nuclear physics, fuel and fuel cycle management, contract administration, and engineering economic principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods and represents the organization in meetings to receive and give reactor engineering perspective to plan and coordinate work. Requires the use of theories, precepts, and practices of the field and related sciences and economics and disciplines. The knowledge and expertise required for this level of work usually results from progressive experience in the nuclear business.

Utilize computer codes as necessary to perform core analysis tasks. Utilize the plant computer as necessary to follow reactor core performance and inform management or core performance problems or concerns.


Supervision Received

Supervision and guidance relate largely to overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters. Consults with management concerning unusual problems and developments.


Supervisory Responsibility

May supervise, coordinate, and review the work of a small multidiscipline staff of engineers, engineering contractors and technicians or staff specialists. May be assisted on projects by other engineers or technicians.

Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard)
Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other Requirements

Bachelor's degree in engineering preferably nuclear or physical science plus related continuing education or experience. Five years experience in the nuclear or reactor engineering area. Licensed Professional Engineer desirable. Membership in professional and technical societies is desirable. Must have demonstrated proficiency in nuclear engineering or physical science as evidenced by completion of Engineering Graduate Progression Plan or equivalent post engineering graduate education and experience. Must be able to obtain and maintain unescorted nuclear plant access and S-3 and S-4 medical qualifications when applicable. Must be able and willing to assume "on-call" rotational assignments which may include 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week availability. Must be willing and medically able to work rotating shifts and maximum overtime permitted by TVAN procedures during peak periods. Must be able and willing to travel to plant locations as required when performing assigned tasks and, as necessary, to be temporarily assigned to a field location.
