Job Description
Provides leadership and support services for Research Services. Provides advanced rodent breeding colony management and training as dictated by customers within the St. Jude research community. Assists management by providing hands-on training and proficiency evaluation of technicians relative to technical skills and SOP content. Through collaboration with research labs, develops new processes and procedures to ensure expert execution of advanced technical work within the in vivo space ensuring high quality and reproducibility of scientific research projects.

Quality Control will be the primary role of this position. Ensuring the unit remains compliant with institutional and industrial standards. Maintaining and authoring all unit SOP's. Conducting routine technique and process assessments and making recommendations for improvements. Mainly working behind a desk with some required hands-on animal work.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Independently address time-sensitive/complex researcher needs and perform advanced procedures within area.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies within area.
  • Oversee accurate and timely documentation (e.g., medical histories, process logs).
  • Troubleshoot issues with procedures and drive implementation and documentation of corrective action.
  • Develop, evaluate, recommend, and implement new procedures/methods/treatments.
  • Lead development and documentation of new Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Collaborate with internal/external teams (e.g., researchers, cross-functional teams, vendors) to coordinate and accomplish team outcomes.
  • Train and guide team members around complex veterinary/research services activities and address any escalations/deviations
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • High school diploma/GED

Minimum Experience:

  • 6+ years of experience in a professional animal care facility (e.g. zoo, veterinary clinic, laboratory animal facility) OR Associate's degree in Lab Animal Science, Biology, Toxicology, or Agricultural with 5+ years experience OR Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of experience.
  • Prior experience within own area (e.g. animal handling and restraint; animal health monitoring; operation and sanitization/sterilization of equipment; sample collection).
  • Significant experience working with applicable regulations and policies regarding animal research (e.g. ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, USDA Animal Welfare Act and Regulations).
  • Significant experience working with ARC or comparable software systems and databases for maintenance/review of documentation/records.
  • Significant experience proposing/implementing process improvements within own area.
  • Proven performance in earlier role/ comparable role.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only:

  • Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) - American Association for Laboratory Animal Science

Special Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Is able to perform more advanced techniques and complex procedures (e.g., Res. Services: aseptic collection of tissues/organs, surgical/necropsy procedures, advanced breeding colony maintenance; Vet. Services: complex vet procedures, emergency triaging and treatment planning) with guidance.

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $26.00 - $45.50 per hour for the role of Research Services Specialist.
