Job Description

Background:
The Second Target Station (STS) is a $2Billion Department of Energy project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) over the next decade. provide wholly new
capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences as well as industry. The
science capabilities provided by the instrument suite at the STS will complement those of the two existing neutron scattering user facilities at ORNL: the First Target Station (FTS) of the SNS
and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). The STS will deliver the highest peak brightness cold neutrons in the world, which together with advances in neutron optics, instrumentation, and
detectors, will ensure U.S. leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come. STS will be capable of supporting 18 individual neutron scattering instruments (beamlines), each of which
transports neutrons from the source to a shielded end station that houses a user-provided sample along with a suite of detectors. Please see http://neutrons.ornl.gov/sts for more
information.
The STS Project is in the preliminary design phase and is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer on a subcontract basis to perform and support STS neutron scattering instrument
designs.

General scope:
We are seeking a mechanical design engineer to produce high quality engineering design packages for components and subsystems of multiple neutron scattering instruments. These
instruments are scientific experiment stations with unique requirements and incorporate custom configurations of various mechanical and electronic components, many of which are
one-of-a-kind articles including support structures, positioning systems, vacuum vessels, neutron optic structures, radiation shielding, and others. In this role, you will work alongside
other instrument engineers and scientists to fully develop these component and subsystem designs. This position would be ideal for those who would like to work in a machine design
development environment. General job duties include:
* Develop engineering requirements and concepts from scientific specifications and
produce final, detailed, and documented designs
* Produce drawings, specifications and other engineering documents
* Perform and document engineering calculations to ensure safety and component performance

* Provide support to the STS Instrument Engineering Group by performing peer reviews
and participating in design reviews.

Work arrangement:
Fulltime, Mon.-Fri., onsite at the STS Project Office. Occasional remote work on a limited basis
may be possible but is not guaranteed. Work will be performed under the general supervision
of the STS Instrument Engineering Manager.

* Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment and to set priorities to
accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:
* Previous experience as a design engineer in an accelerator or nuclear environment
* Proficiency in Finite Element Analysis
* Familiarity with multiple manufacturing processes and their associated design
considerations
* Familiarity with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
* Experience with weldment designs and American Welding Society (AWS) drawing symbology
