The Tennessee Department of Treasury is responsible for many of the financial operations of state government, including managing more than $100 billion in assets through its various investment programs. Treasury administers the state pension plan, known as the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System, and the States Deferred Compensation plan. Treasury serves all Tennesseans by helping to educate and empower individuals to make informed financial choices, and by providing public serving programs in the areas of college savings, financial literacy, unclaimed property, criminal injuries compensation, and more. The Legal team is a small group of attorneys working for a Department that is diverse and dynamic. We work in a team-like environment that encourages diversity of thought and perspective. Job Overview:

LCA seeks a dynamic attorney to bring diversity of thought and perspective to our Legal team. This is an exciting opportunity for an attorney looking to practice administrative law while developing an expertise in pension and securities law. Through this position, the successful candidate will provide legal advice, interpretations, and guidance to all the varied Treasury programs, and engage in the legislative process, board governance, procurements, and administrative law cases. At the present time, this position is primarily remote, with occasional in person meetings in downtown Nashville; however, job location is subject to change at the discretion of the Treasurer. The successful candidate must live in Tennessee, and have a sufficient internet connection. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal guidance and analysis in crafting solutions to innovative issues and matters of first impression.
  • Working collegially with other Divisions in the Department to assist in the development and implementation of holistic solutions by providing legal advice and counsel.
  • Provide legal advice and written legal analysis to Treasury programs to minimize risk and ensure compliance with applicable laws and rules. Assist in reviewing and revising policies and procedures to ensure compliance and minimize risk.
  • Draft and analyze legislation and fiscal notes affecting the State Treasurer and the Department.
  • Review and analyze the effects of proposed state and federal legislation.
  • Draft solicitation documents and review service provider agreements.
  • Assist in the preparation and management of occasional administrative law cases.
  • Assist the Department with board meetings, subpoenas and public records requests.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Tennessee.
  • Graduation from an accredited law school.
  • Graduation from four (4)-year college or university.
  • At least five (5) years of experience practicing law.
