The Welding Engineer will be responsible for providing support to the Projects Engineering group, existing facilities operations, construction, and maintenance activities. Project support includes participation in designs ranging from scope definition, feasibility and conceptual studies, and preliminary/detailed designs. The Welding Engineer writes welding requirements for procurement documents, welding, brazing, and bonding procedures in compliance with applicable code requirements. The candidate also solves problems in designing and maintaining plant facilities and processes. The candidate will be responsible for training site personnel from engineering, maintenance, and construction on the welding requirements, criteria, and compliance documents applicable for performing work activities.
The Welding Engineer also reviews design output documents for welding technical data and compliance with national codes and standards and company approved procedures and policies, and they may draft and provide assistance in the execution of ICR's, NCR's, and retraining should a nonconformance or required process improvement be identified. The Welding Engineer evaluates bid proposals for technical compliance of welding submittals, reviews supplier submittals, and conducts supplier surveillances to ensure compliance to contractually specified welding requirements.
The Welding Engineer may be assigned field activities supporting on-site organizations, including on-site subcontractors, performing welding, brazing, bonding activities or non-destructive examination activities that falls within the scope of the Welding Program Manual. The Field Welding Engineer (FWE) candidate maintains oversight/ownership and ultimate responsibilities of Rod Rooms. The FWE reviews on-site work packages involving welding to ensure that design output is complete and correct and establishes hold points for the fabrication and inspection of welds that satisfy the code, specifications, and procedure requirements. The candidate generates the Weld Inspection Record and any associated weld maps for the work package and
maintains them by completing and tracking all alterations from the originals, and they may perform random in-process oversight activities of any on-site welding activity. The FWE reviews all completed Welding Inspection Records for completeness and correctness before final closeout. The candidate must have extensive technical knowledge and understanding of AWS D1.1, AWS A2.4, ASME B31, and ASME Section IX Welding codes. The FWE will assist in the processing of non-conformances and will generate and release of supplemental weld instructions including repair operations. Knowledge in the SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW processes. Knowledge of autogenous weld process for stainless steel tube for high vacuum applications. Knowledge of
manual and automatic GTAW welding of stainless steel for high vacuum applications.
Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA OR aMaster's degreewith a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA OR a PhDwith a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA.
There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond four years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
A person with an ABET accredited B.S. degree in a related engineering/science discipline
In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 2 years job-related and at least 1-year nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative).DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment.In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.(Ref. A trained welding professional with a B.S. degree with Welding Engineering/Welding Engineering Technology concentration from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program.
